Space-saving and flexible energy supply in the JEEVES service robot

The service robot "JEEVES" automates the service of hotel guests or the transport of goods in hospitals over the last mile. The mobile robot is equipped with several drawers to enable the transport of products along several stations and to permanently relieve the staff in the hotel or hospital.

When developing JEEVES, one of the aims was to find a solution to route the data and power cables reliably, in a small installation space and yet easily accessible from the outside. Since as much space as possible had to be planned for the goods to be transported, a cable guide and cables had to be found that would allow tight bend radii. Simple assembly of the solution and permanent resistance to frost were also important, as the robot works as a mobile minibar in hotels, for example.

In order to be able to clean the robot easily, products were also required that could be easily removed from the robot together with the drawers and reinserted.

As part of the development of the JEEVES service robot, a reliable and space-saving solution for supplying power and data to the automated refrigerator drawers was implemented.

The E2.10.06.018.0 energy chain was used here, which made it possible to route both the required power and data cables safely and securely with a minimal bend radius - and without any significant loss of installation space or risk of freezing.

This solution ensures a safe and long-lasting supply to the moving components, even if the drawers are opened and closed frequently.

In order to determine the existing drawer contents, camera-based detection technology was initially considered.
However, after detailed examination and consultation, this option was decided against. The chosen alternative, a combination of simple sensor technology
and our flexible energy supply system, offers an optimum balance of functionality, low costs and technical feasibility.
