Frequently asked questions

They can be, it really depends on the part you need to replace. Motors for example can be expensive, plain bearings are not.

An e-bike is a bicycle which is motorised. This doesn't mean that you don't have to work hard! The rider still has to pedal, the motor is there to male the ride a little easier when you need a boost!

Yes they are, however submerging them in water is not recommended as it will damage the electronics. Even the igus e-bike, which is made from recycled plastics, is OK in rain water but not submerged. The non electric bike from igus is fine fully submerged.

There are kits that can adapt a standard bike to an e-bike but not all bikes are compatible.

SRAM dérailleurs

This specific area of bikes and e-bikes use lubrication-free iglidur® G plastic plain bearings in rear derailleurs to improve durability and shifting precision. These bearings are designed to resist mud, water, dirt, sand, oil and shock impacts. All of these elements aid eliminating the need for regular lubrication or bearing maintenance.

Using igus solutions include benefits such as; lower weight, corrosion resistance, low friction, and longer service life. This compared with traditional metal or lubricated bushings, identifies the positives that the igus solutions can bring to customers. SRAM uses these igus bearings across many derailleur pivot points because they maintain accurate gear alignment even under harsh MTB riding conditions.

MTB pedals from Crankbrothers

Self-lubricating iglidur® JB plain bearings are used for mountain bike pedals to improve durability and reduce weight. Crankbrothers needed bearings that could survive harsh off-road conditions, while resisting the build up of dirt. On top of this, they needed the pedals to remain lightweight and maintenance-free.

After extensive testing, the iglidur bearings achieved up to eight times longer service life than the previous solution, while also maintaining smooth pedal performance in extremely muddy environments. The bearings are corrosion-resistant, impact-resistant, and require no additional lubrication, making them well suited for MTB use.

Replacement 3D gears for an e-bike

When a customer asked for new gears for a planetary gearbox for their e-bike, 3d printing was found to be the best option.

Replacement gears were needed for the heavily worn gears in the e-bike and the manufacturer of the electric bike was unable to supply replacement gears. Therefore the customer turned to igus for a solution. The new gears were modelled on the old, worn components and printed using the laser sintering process. The customer was able to install the gears immediately noticed an improvement in the performance of the gearbox.

ibis cycles full suspension frames

When ibis cycles came to igus in 2013 for a solution to replace metal ball bearings on the lower rocker of the DW link on the rear triangle, we knew we could help.

Originally used in the Ripley trail bike model and are now used in all ibis full-suspension frames, sabing 80g in weight compared to their predecessors. They also increased rigidity and reduced maintenance to zero
