When the three parallel milling and drilling units move in a woodworking portal, not only do the power supplies and signal cables have to be routed, but also the cooling media and compressed air for the pneumatic drives and actuators. The extraction of the chips must also be routed. The hose for the extraction system on the BIMA P 980 has a diameter of 250 mm.

The flying chips and wood dust place special demands on the energy chain. One critical point is the fine dust, which must not be allowed to penetrate the chain joints.

Even when the machine is working in chip flight, the igus® energy chain fulfils these requirements. It makes no difference whether the e-chain® is installed in open or closed form (e.g. hinged energy tubes). This is because the smooth outer contour means that no wood dust, no matter how fine, can get into the encapsulated or closed stop-dog. IMA can therefore rely on off-the-shelf products.

At first glance, the wide range of 40,000 different products in this area may seem confusing. However, it offers users the enormous advantage that they do not have to pay attention to the energy chain during design, but can be sure that there is a suitable series for the individual application profile. In most applications, IMA uses the e-chain® series E2 and E4. In some cases, however, special designs and variants have already been realised.
