Temperatures

iglidur UW160 was developed for use in liquid media in the normal and medium temperature range. As with all thermoplastics, the compressive strength of iglidur UW160 decreases with increasing temperatures. The temperatures prevailing in the bearing system also have an influence on the bearing wear. The wear increases with rising temperatures. Additional protection is required at temperatures higher than +70°C.

Permissible surface speeds

The maximum permitted surface speed is based on the frictional heat generated at the bearing surface. The temperature should only be permitted to increase to a value that will ensure a sustainable use of the bearing with respect to wear and dimensional integrity. The maximum values specified in the table are for the dry operation. In media-flushed applications, significantly higher speeds can be achieved due to reduced heat generation depending on the installation.

Mechanical properties

The compressive strength of iglidur UW160 plain bearings decreases with increasing temperatures. Diagram 02 shows this inverse relationship. The maximum recommended surface pressure is a mechanical material parameter. No conclusions about the tribological properties can be drawn from this. Diagram 03 shows how iglidur UW160 deforms elastically under radial loads.

Friction and wear

Coefficient of friction and wear change with the application parameters. The influence of surface speed and shaft roughness on the coefficient of friction is low, but the coefficient of friction decreases significantly with increasing radial load, especially in the range up to 7.5MPa.

Shaft materials

Diagram 06 shows an extract of the results of tests with different shaft materials carried out with iglidur UW160 plain bearings in dry operation. Using the example of a rotational movement with radial loads of 1MPa and a speed of 0.3m/s, it becomes clear that iglidur UW160 achieves good wear values with a wide variety of shafts, with the exception of pairing with 304 SS shafts. It is also clear that there are more suitable iglidur materials for dry operation. As with many other iglidur materials in dry operation, diagram 07 shows the significantly higher wear in rotating compared to pivoting applications, with otherwise identical parameters.

Chemical resistance

iglidur UW160 plain bearings have very good resistance to chemicals. The vast majority of organic and inorganic acids do not attack iglidur UW160, nor do alkalis or lubricants.

Installation tolerances

iglidur UW160 plain bearings are standard bearings for shafts with h-tolerance (recommended minimum h9). The bearings are designed for press-fitting into a housing machined to a H7 tolerance. After being assembled into a nominal size housing, the inner diameter automatically adjusts to the E10 tolerances in standard cases.

Moisture absorption

The moisture absorption of iglidur UW160 plain bearings is 0.1% in standard climatic conditions. The saturation limit in water is equally only 0.1%.

Resistance to weathering

iglidur UW160 plain bearings are permanently resistant to weathering. The material properties deteriorate only slightly. Any discolouration that may occur is only of a superficial nature.
