Award-winning concert hall uses igus® technology to support acoustic engineering

The Tung Auditorium, located within the University of Liverpool's Yoko Ono Lennon Centre, required a highly flexible and reliable cable management solution to support a wide range of performances and events. Working alongside Adlib, Ellis Williams Architects and Arup Consultants, the venue selected the igus® HD e-spool® cable reel system to manage dynamic cabling requirements while maintaining exceptional reliability and performance.

The successful installation contributed to the auditorium winning the 2024 MONDO-DR Award in the Concert Hall category.

Requirement, challenge and solution for the Tung Auditorium

Requirement

The Tung Auditorium needed a versatile performance space capable of supporting a broad range of uses, from piano recitals and string quartets to singers, lectures and full orchestral performances of up to 70 musicians. This required a cable management solution that could handle large volumes of audio, data and multicore cabling while allowing continuous movement and flexibility within the venue.

Challenge

The venue required a system that could reliably manage moving cables within a dynamic performance environment. The solution needed to prevent cable twisting and damage while supporting frequent stage and auditorium reconfigurations. Reliability was critical, as downtime during events or daily university operations would be unacceptable.

Solution

The igus® HD e-spool® industrial cable reel system was installed above the auditorium alongside the motorised winches. Using the innovative igus® twisterband, the system manages moving cables without twisting them and eliminates the need for slip rings or cable breaks.

The design provides reliable, efficient cable management while extending cable service life, reducing maintenance requirements and minimising downtime. The modular design also allows cables to be added or modified in the future, ensuring long-term flexibility for the venue.
