SkyAmps is the idea of eight aspiring industrial engineers from DHBW Heidenheim who have set themselves the objective of making wind energy commercially viable even in Baden Württemberg. Within this framework, the public response has been enormous on account of the topicality of the subject involved. This also enabled them, only recently, to win the prize as best European Team in the Galileo Masters. SkyAmps is a wind power plant made of kites. The kites rise alternately and, in doing so, unwind their cords, which causes a shaft on the ground to rotate. As the kites have been coiled in different directions on the shaft, one kite pulls down the second kite as it rises. This works because the kites achieve different amounts of tensile force as they are on different trajectories. The rotary movement of the shaft is exploited using a generator to produce electricity in this way. This can be seen in more detail in the animated film on YouTube
To be able to use this CO2-free and reliable technology for wind energy constitutes a commercial possibility to replace previous technologies to a great extent. This opens up a wide door towards a future free of nuclear power.
The benefits of the system arise from the fact that winds become more and more constant and also faster with increasing altitude. A wind power plant with kites can also achieve a higher rate of capacity utilisation with a constant level of wind because the kites are able to rise higher, in contrast to wind turbines. This is advantageous especially in hilly areas as commercial wind power plants are uneconomical there on account of their design. Specifically in regions such as Baden-Württemberg, a kite wind power plant can be used to step up the development of renewable energies. Another theory comes into play at SkyAmps, however, that makes it possible to generate electricity without consuming electricity. It is a fact known from kitesurfing that kites develop more tensile force at flat angles (see diagram 2). This is exploited by SkyAmps by one kite pulling at a flat angle and, by doing so, rotating a shaft. There is a second kite attached to this shaft which is pulled down by the rotary movement. At the same time, there is a generator attached which generates the electricity. This constitutes the innovation by SkyAmps – a worldwide first.
Worm gear screw jacks from igus® (SAW-1040-E-07-E0120RG-306, SAW-1040-E-07-E0120RG-400, MF-2040-NEMA23, COU-AR-K-063-100-32-32-B-AAAA) were used for the cord guides on the ground unit and constitute an essential component for the proper functioning of automatic operation.
