xiros® plastic ball bearings

xiros® plastic ball bearings require no lubrication, are corrosion resistant and operate quietly. These attributes makes them a cost-effective alternative to ball bearings. The key elements of the all-plastic components enable these products to be lightweight, chemical resistant and non-magnetic. This allows them to be used safely in the medical industry or food processing environments. The xiros® plastic ball bearings material consists of a blend of base plastics, solid lubricants, fibers and filaments and these are complimented with glass, plastic or stainless steel balls.
Key benefits:

  • 100% self-lubricating and maintenance-free
  • Highly corrosion-resistant
  • Options for extreme temperaures
  • FDA-compliant
  • Lightweight – 60% lighter than metal
  • No minimum order quantity

Frequently asked questions about xiros® plastic ball bearings.

What is a ball bearing?

Ball bearings belong to the family of rolling bearings. Moving between an inner ring and an outer ring, rolling bodies reduce rotational friction and absorb radial and axial loads. Because the balls roll, they have a much smaller coefficient of friction than two flat surfaces that slide against each other. Due to the smaller contact surface between balls and rings, the ball bearings tend to have a lower load capacity for their size than other kinds of rolling bearings.

What advantages do the xiros® plastic ball bearings have over other ball bearings?

Xiros® plastic ball bearings are lubrication and maintenance-free. They are lightweight, corrosion resistant and have a high media resistance.

Where are xiros® plastic ball bearings used?

There are lots of applications and industries that xiros® ball bearings are used, labelling machines, food and packaging and conveyors.

Measurement requirements and installation recommendations

igus is one of just a few manufacturers worldwide who produce ball bearing rings in injection moulding. This offers users the following advantages:

  • High wear resistance due to the shape under high pressure
  • Homogeneous material distribution
  • Cost-effective production, leading to cheap sales prices
  • Simplification of ball bearing installation
Due to this manufacturing process, different rules apply to the measurement as well as the installation compared to metal or ceramic ball bearings. The outer ring of the polymer ball bearings has a conical shape. This simplifies the installation in a suitable housing (with the narrow side first). After press-fit into a housing machined to a H7 tolerance the bearing clearance is reduced. Therefore, the ball bearings must be measured over the entire width; starting at an angle of 90° from the injection point.
