Heat-resistant tribofilament® for abrasion-resistant special parts in 3D printing

What to consider when using high-temperature filaments.

There are multiple applications that high-temperature 3D filaments would be required. But what needs to be considered?
  • To process high-temperature filaments, you need a 3D printer with an installation space temperature of at least 160°C
  • It is especially important to store the high-temperature filaments so that they are protected from moisture and to dry them before they are used so that no quality problems arise

Building a high-temperature 3D printer yourself

Normal 3D printers cannot produce the necessary installation space and nozzle temperature, and most models on the market are very expensive. Our team used igus® components to build a high-temperature printer.
Basic data:
  • Installation space dimensions: 160x145x150mm
  • External dimensions: about 450x450x500mm
  • Weight: about 30-40kg
  • Heating system: print head: 40 W standard, heater cartridge: E3D
  • Print table: custom design Micanite heating elements between two steel plates
  • Installation space: oven fan and heating coil (see CAD assembly)
All components for 3D printing design that were used can be found in our online shop, and the design data can be downloaded here:

Further information about the high-temperature 3D printer igus® built:

  • No print bed heating necessary, since heating is performed through the installation space as well
  • Control all heating elements directly through DUET
  • Print head: E3D v6 with titanium Heatbreak, copper block, various nozzles, 0.4-0.6mm (hard metal), cooled with compressed air
  • Printing plate: print table, removable aluminium disk, component adhesion with various films (such as iglidur® RW370 and iglidur® J350: PET film)
  • Heat chamber insulation: glass fibre insulation on the installation space exterior (in the ASM installation space assembly and the ASM installation space lid); flexible silicone glass fibre mats in the installation space slots for XY mechanics
  • Printing parameters: for example, iglidur® RW370 - nozzle temperature 350°C, print bed 200°C, installation space 180°C, nozzle diameter 0.4mm, layer thickness 0.15mm, speed 30mm/s, with raft
  • Heat distribution: insulation outer temperature about 80°C, housing outer temperature about 60°C, some stepper motors cooled with compressed air (so far only the X-axis); so far no problems with overheating
  • Printer control: DUET Ethernet, heating controlled via DUET
  • Software: Simplify3D, installation space heating via macros
